After his first professional experiences with the great pioneer designer Raymond Loewy, with whom he designed, among other things, a sewing machine, Thomas Bastide was the accredited permanent creator for Baccarat for eighteen years.
He seems to have been destined to work in glass, crystal and art from his childhood: his Swedish mother was a painter and stylist (who worked for Haviland)and his father was the writer François-Régis Bastide. At the age of five Thomas discovered glass in the south of Sweden, where master-glaziers such as Kosta-Boda were working: 'An old glazier used to give me pieces of glass and I'd play at sticking them together to make little sculptures'.
